NSCC Student Association

At the heart of student life...your NSCC Student Association

We are students working together to improve student life by creating opportunities for balanced lifestyles, promoting health and wellness, and encouraging campus-wide communication and participation.

As a student at NSCC, you automatically become a member of an amazing organization – your Student Association (SA). Each of our campuses across the province has its own SA, which is governed by an elected student Executive Committee (made up of President, VP Finance, VP Communications, VP Services and VP Activities) and various class and program representatives. From the very first day of classes, your Student Association (SA) begins its work to create an exciting student experience just for you. The mission of the SA it is to organize activities and events (both on campus and off), provide important programs to support your growth as a student and offer great services that make your learning environment more enjoyable.

Governance of the Student Association

Each of our 14 Student Associations is governed by one shared document – the NSCC SA Common Constitution. This constitution outlines the general principles, roles, responsibilities and operating guidelines of your SA. It covers such areas as: SA membership, officers of the SA, how student leaders maintain executive status, elections, and position responsibilities, among others.

The NSCC SA Common Constitution was ratified on April 11, 2003 and is dedicated to the memory of Natalie Charbonneau (1974-2003) whose leadership and vision guided its creation.

Student Association Activities

No two campus Student Associations are 100% alike – the activities, events, programs and services offered by the Student Association are ultimately determined based on the needs of each specific student membership. Events

We are always adding to our growing events calendar, but provincially there are already a few exciting things underway for the upcoming academic year...

  • NSCC College Idol - Think you're a great singer? Prove it by auditioning for our Campus Idol competition. Each campus winner will advance to the Provincial NSCC College Idol competition and will have a chance to win the $1,000 cash prize not to mention ultimate bragging rights.
  • Frost Fest - Join us in the month of February for Frost Fest, our very own unique winter carnival experience.

We are always looking for ways to make student life fun for everyone. If you have a great event idea, an interesting program or service you think students might really enjoy or you just want to help us out, email us and tell us all about it.

Getting Involved

As each campus population grows, so too will the level and variety of services provided by the Student Association. The best way to ensure that the Student Association is meeting your needs is to become an active part of the organization. And there are many ways to get involved.

You could run for an Executive Committee position on the Student Association. These positions require a time commitment of at least 5 hours/week but the rewards are huge. You get to meet lots of people, learn new skills and develop an amazing portfolio, attend conferences and network with NSCC students from across the province, receive an honorarium for your work and most importantly, make a difference in the lives of students at NSCC. Check with your campus Student Association to find out more about upcoming elections and the positions on offer.

You could serve as a Class Representative on the SA Students' Council. For students with less time to devote, but who are just as interested in serving their fellow students, becoming a class rep makes great sense. You will attend 1-2 Students' Council meetings/month and these meetings are much like those of a Board of Directors. It is the primary decision making body of the Student Association and deals with organizational purpose, general allocation of resources, strategic planning and visioning, funding requests, policy and procedure ratification as well as approval of the Student Association operating budget. What an opportunity to make a huge impact.

You could apply for a job as Sports & Recreation Coordinator, Social Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, or Chief Elections Officer. These positions work closely with the Executive Committee to deliver programs and services to students at the campus level – a great way to add to your employability skills. Watch for the "Now Hiring" posters/emails on campus to find out how and when to apply.

You could start a student club or society. To support the diversity of student interests on campus, the Student Association encourages student involvement on campus through the development of campus clubs and societies. Examples such as the Human Services Society, Culinary Society, or Engineering Society can relate to specific fields of study at NSCC, while others may focus on specific social and community issues or leisure interests, like a snowboarding club or dance club. If you are thinking about starting a club or society, take a look at our Clubs and Societies Checklist, which gives you the run down on how to get your club started. Then, fill out the forms in the Campus Clubs & Societies Kit or drop by the SA office for assistance. There are lots of benefits to being a chartered club or student society on campus, so submit your package today.

You don't have to be a professional athlete to get involved in our sports and recreation activities. All you need is a desire to participate. Drop by the SA office to find out more about intramurals, club sports as well as some of the sports teams we will be fielding this year. Got time? Get Active!

Have a little bit of spare time during your week and want to fill it in some meaningful way? Why not volunteer with the Student Association and spend your free time helping out your fellow students. The SA is always looking for volunteers that can assist in making things happen. Our volunteers help out with event set up and promotion, ticket sales, postering, service delivery (i.e. food drives, event photography) and much, much more. And as an SA volunteer, you also get some great perks like free event tickets, prizes, and free food. We also give you a snazzy certificate for your portfolio. Sound like fun? Well, drop your campus SA an email and make sure to include "Volunteer" in the subject line and you'll be added to a growing database of students who want to make student life at NSCC great.

You could participate. The SA spends a lot of time and money planning all of these activities and programs just for you. Seems a shame to let it all go to waste, doesn't it? So bring your son, daughter, niece or nephew to our Kids on Campus Halloween Party. Take advantage of peer tutoring if you find yourself in need of academic support. Help with the food drive for the campus food bank or grab a ticket to our student movie night. After all, it's all for you.
